if you have 1 week
If you have just one week, I recommend flying into Liberia instead of San José to maximize your time. Here’s a balanced itinerary with adventure and beach time
Monteverde & Cloud Forest (2-3 Days)
Monteverde is one of Costa Rica’s most famous eco-destinations. Families can explore the cloud forest by walking on hanging bridges or taking a guided night tour to see animals.
Adventure lovers can go ziplining through the treetops, while younger kids will enjoy visiting the butterfly garden and hummingbird cafe.
Don’t miss a visit to the Monteverde Cheese Factory for a sweet treat!

Nosara or Samara – Beach Time (4-5 Days)
Nosara is known for its laid-back vibe, great surf schools, and strong eco-conscious community. Families can enjoy beginner-friendly surf lessons, take yoga classes, or visit the Sibu Wildlife Sanctuary to learn about rescued animals.
Sámara, on the other hand, is perfect for those looking for calm, swimmable waters and a relaxed atmosphere.
Both locations offer excellent options for spotting wildlife, from howler monkeys to sea turtles during nesting season.

if you have 2 weeks
If you have two weeks, take the one-week itinerary and add these two incredible stops
La Fortuna & Arenal Volcano (3-4 Days)
Arenal is a must-visit for families. Take a dip in natural hot springs, hike around the volcano, or go on a wildlife safari by boat. Kids will love the hanging bridges and the sloth sanctuary.

Dominical & Uvita – More Beach & Wildlife (4-5 Days)
Head to the Pacific coast for a mix of beach time and nature. Dominical has a relaxed surfer vibe, while Uvita is home to Marino Ballena National Park (great for whale watching in season). Families can explore waterfalls, go kayaking, or take a boat tour to see dolphins.

if you have 3 weeks and more
If you have three weeks, take the two-week itinerary and add these additional destinations for a deeper dive into Costa Rica’s natural beauty
Puerto Viejo de Talamanca (4-5 Days)
Located on the Caribbean coast, Puerto Viejo offers a unique blend of Afro-Caribbean culture, stunning beaches, and abundant wildlife. Families can explore Cahuita National Park, which has an easy hiking trail and a coral reef for snorkeling. The Jaguar Rescue Center is a great spot to learn about local wildlife conservation.

Corcovado National Park (3-4 Days)
Corcovado is one of the most biodiverse places on the planet. Located on the Osa Peninsula, it’s a haven for nature lovers. Families can take guided hikes to spot scarlet macaws, tapirs, and, if lucky, even a jaguar. Staying in Drake Bay provides easy access to the park, along with opportunities for snorkeling at Cano Island.

There is of course a lot more to discover in Costa Rica, but this itinerary is a great base to begin your adventure!
Extra tips for visiting Costa Rica:
Best Time to Visit: The dry season (December to April) is ideal, but the green season (May to November) offers fewer crowds and lush landscapes.
Getting Around: Renting a car is the best way to explore at your own pace. Don’t try to do it with public transport.
My family and I fell in love with Costa Rica in 2021 and returned every year to explore more. Now, we live in a beautiful mountain village and spend our weekends discovering hidden gems across the country. From the beauty of Europe to the beauty of nature!
